Club Profile

THE BIG FOUR ENGLAND

MANCHESTER UNITED

Sport News Flash 2013 , Manchester United Profile  - This is club was formed as Newton Heath L&YR F.C in 1878, but changed its name to Manchester United in 1902.
The Red Devils won their first title in 1908, but it was not until the 1950s, and after the great Sir Matt Busby had taken over as manager, that the club enjoyed its first period of sustained success.
He steered the club to three championships over the decade, and United also became the first English club to compete in the European Cup, where they lost in the semi-finals to Real Madrid in 1957.
The club endured its darkest day in 1958 when the plane carrying the team home from a European match crashed, killing eight players in a tragedy known as the Munich air disaster. Busby, who survived the crash along with arguably the club's greatest ever player Sir Bobby Charlton, rebuilt the team. A side featuring the dazzling George Best and Denis Law won two league titles in the 60s, before claiming their maiden European Cup, defeating Benfica in the 1968 final.
After Busby resigned in 1969, no manager came close to emulating his success until Ferguson arrived in 86. After reportedly coming within one defeat of losing his job in 1990, Ferguson built a dynasty at Old Trafford and the club have now won more league titles than Liverpool. A crop of home grown players who came through in the 90s including Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, were integral to many of the club's triumphs.

Manchester United have been the dominant force since the Premier League's inception in 1992.The Red Devils have won 12 titles and two Champions Leagues under their long-serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The likes of Arsenal and Chelsea have challenged United in several seasons since the Premier League began, winning three titles apiece, but Ferguson has always rebuilt his squad ensuring that the Red Devils bounce back from the odd indifferent campaign. Ferguson, who in the 2010-11 season overhauled Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles by helping United to their 19th, has been at Old Trafford since 1986 and will be a hard act to follow when he finally retires.

CHELSEA

Sport News Flash 2013 , Chelsea Profile  -  Despite being formed in 1905, Chelsea had to wait 50 years for their first major trophy, in the form of a 1955 league title.
A side featuring the talents of Ron 'Chopper' Harris, Ian Hutchinson and Peter Osgood defeated Leeds United to win the 1970 FA Cup, the first in the club's history.

The 1990s saw the arrival of Ruud Gullit who won the 1997 FA Cup as manager, and Gianluca Vialli repeated the trick two years later. Both came to the club as players before making their first strides into management at Stamford Bridge. The club's supporters had been starved of success for many years, but those lucky enough to have season tickets in the 1990s were privileged to be seeing the likes of Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly and George Weah turning out at the Bridge on a weekly basis. However, it was another 50 years until they would repeat their league title success, this time under the charismatic Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, also winning the FA Cup, and League Cup twice.

Since billionaire Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich swung into town in 2003 Chelsea have enjoyed the sort of success supporters must have thought they would never witness. The club have won three Premier League titles and realized their Champions League dream in 2012. In the summer of 2011 Chelsea sacked Carlo Ancelotti, who had won the double with the club a year earlier, and hired 33-year-old Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas.
But the job proved too much for such a young manager and in March 2012 he was sacked and replaced by assistant manager Roberto di Matteo until the end of the season. The Italian rebuilt team spirit and steered the Blues to a penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final to finally realize Abramovich's dream of winning the European Cup and secure the job on a permanent basis.

LIVERPOOL

Sport News Flash 2013 , Liverpool Profile  -  Liverpool won their first title in 1901 after gaining promotion to the First Division in 1894. The appointment of Bill Shankly in 1959 signaled the start of a golden era in the club's history. One of the most successful British managers ever, Shankly led the club to promotion in 1962 and they have remained in the top flight ever since. Shankly won three league titles, two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup, before retiring in 1974 and being replaced by his assistant Bob Paisley.

Paisley's nine-year reign saw Liverpool win an astonishing 21 trophies, including three European Cups, six league titles and a UEFA Cup. Few would have expected that when Shankly retired, his record would be bettered by Paisley. Liverpool's history is also shrouded in sadness as the club was at the heart of two notorious stadium disasters.

The first came before the 1985 European Cup final against Juventus at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium. Thirty-nine people were killed, including 32 Juventus fans who were attacked by Liverpool supporters. A masonry wall failed and then collapsed under the pressure of escaping fans, with 600 people also injured.
Liverpool were banned from European competition for six years, with the other English clubs excluded for five. Four years later when Liverpool were playing Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough in Sheffield, 96 Liverpool fans died due to overcrowding.

Liverpool's illustrious history means supporter expectation weighs heavily on the shoulders of players and managers alike. Winners of 18 league titles and five European Cups, the Reds have struggled to revive the glory of the 1970s and 80s under a series of managers since the Premier League’s inception in 1992. The club have yet to win a Premier League title, although the dramatic 2005 Champions League triumph under former manager Rafael Benitez represented a brief return to former glories. Since then, however, the Reds have won just one FA Cup despite boasting the talents of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Pepe Reina.

ARSENAL

Sport News Flash 2013 , Arsenal Profile - Arsenal are nicknamed 'The Gunners' because they were formed by a group of cannon makers at the Woolwich Arsenal in 1886.

After turning professional in 1891, the club joined the second division two years later and were promoted to the top flight in 1904.

The great Herbert Chapman arrived in 1925 and he started a sustained spell of success, before dying of pneumonia in 1934. His impact was nothing short of revolutionary, as he introduced new training methods and the 3-4-3 or 'WM' formation. Chapman helped the club to their first major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1930 and two league titles followed. The club won five league titles in the 30s, the most sustained period of success in the Gunners' history.

Since Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal in 1996, the Frenchman has turned the Gunners into the most aesthetically pleasing side in England. Wenger has delivered two league and cup doubles in his time at Arsenal, and taken the club to two European finals while maintaining a style of play so pleasing on the eye that only Barcelona can claim to play a more scintillating brand of club soccer. But the Gunners have not won a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup and as the years have gone on, the fans and media have questioned Wenger's unwavering faith in youth and refusal to spend big money in the transfer market. The days of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires have gone and Wenger is now waiting for the likes of Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere et al to usher the club into a new period of sustained success.

THE BIG FOUR ITALY

JUVENTUS

Sport News Flash 2013 , Juventus Profile -  Legend has it that the club was founded in 1897 by a group of boys who wanted to set up a sports club, primarily for soccer. If true, they could surely not have imagined that Juventus would become the most successful club in Italian soccer history.

The Bianconeri won their first league championship in 1905, but there was trouble brewing as in 1906 the club split because some staff were considering moving Juve out of Turin. The president, Alfredo Dick, was unhappy with this, forming another club FBC Torino, and taking some players with him. Torino are now Juve’s city rivals, but have not enjoyed the same success as the Bianconeri.

In the history of football, Juventus is a club without compare. Known affectionately as "La Vecchia Signora" (The Old Lady), "Juve" were founded on 1 November 1897. But as her name suggests ("Juventus" means "youth" in Latin), this particular centenarian has lost none of her faculties with age. The club's statutes were written on a bench at the corner of the Corso Re-Umberto and the Corso Vittorio Emmanuele in Turin, the daily meeting place of fifteen or so students from the Ginnasio Massimo d'Azeglio high school and two 20-year-old bicycle repairmen, Eugenio and Enrico Canfari.

Juventus Football Club, whose original strip was pink, did not contest its first official match until three years later, a game they lost (1-0) to FC Torinese. Three more years then elapsed before Juventus adopted their new colours, when they acquired a set of black-and-white vertical striped shirts from John Savage, an Englishman living in Turin who had passed on the order to friends back in Nottingham.

Juve won their first title in 1905, but it was in 1923 that the club really hit the big time when it was taken over by the Agnelli family, owners of the powerful Fiat motor group. Lured by of the guarantee of regular wages and the perk of a gleaming new car provided by the Italian firm, several big name players soon headed for the Piedmont club, which proceeded to clinch five consecutive titles between 1931 and 35. Juve went on to cement their place among the giants of Italian football courtesy of the arrival of world-class talents such as Giampiero Boniperti, the Welshman John Charles and the Argentinian Omar Sivori.

Juventus are Italy’s most successful club and one of the best supported in the country. The Bianconeri have won 28 league titles, the latest of those coming in 2012. Prior to that the club endured an eight year title drought, due largely to their relegation to Serie B for their part in a corruption scandal that rocked Italian soccer in the middle of the decade. Having controversially dispensed with coach Claudio Ranieri in May 2009, Juve finished seventh in successive seasons under, first, club legend Ciro Ferrara and then ex Sampdoria coach Luigi Del Neri. Former captain Antonio Conte took over in the summer of 2011 and in his first season in charge was able to help Juve end the dominance of the Milan clubs as his side won the title without losing a game.

AS ROMA

Sport News Flash 2013 , Inter Milan FC Profile -  Associazione Sportiva Roma, known simply as Roma, came into existence when three clubs from the Italian Capital, Rome, were merged into one in 1927 by Italo Fosch. The purpose of the merger was to create a single strong club from Rome to challenge the strength of the Northern Italian football clubs. There was one club that resisted the move, Lazio, and it has grown to become Roma's most bitter rival. The Derby between Lazio and Roma is one of the most heated, often violent, rivalries in world football. It is known in Italy as the Derby della Capitale and is the most eagerly awaited fixture by both sets of fans.
AS Roma was founded in 1927, with three clubs merged into one in an effort to form a club capable of taking on the more dominant Northern Italian outfits. After finishing as runners-up twice in the 1930s, the club claimed its first Scudetto title in 1942, with the goals of local player Amedeo Amadei vital in this success. The club suffered it's only relegation in 1951, but were promoted back into Serie A at the first time of asking under Giuseppe Viani.

AS Roma may not have won Serie A since the glorious 2000/01 season under Fabio Capello, but they have finished runners-up in the league on no fewer than six occasions since the turn of the century.
The club also have trophies to show for their swaggering style of play in the form of two Coppa Italias won under the stewardship of Luciano Spalletti. The club's all-time leading goalscorer Francesco Totti remains the idol of their passionate following. His influence on the field may have waned in his advancing years, but he remains a cult figure at the Stadio Olimpico. In the summer of 2012 former coach Zdeněk Zeman replaced Luis Enrique, ushering in an exciting period in the club’s history.

INTER MILAN

Sport News Flash 2013 , Inter Milan FC Profile -  After being formed in 1908 by a group of rebels in opposition to "Milan Cricket and Football Club" (now AC Milan), it did not take long for the club to win its first league title in 1910. The founders of Internazionale wished to accept foreign players into the club, and Inter’s first captain was a Swiss player by the name of Hernst Manktl. Giuseppe Meazza enjoyed great success with Inter after being rejected by rivals Milan as a boy. He holds the record for most goals scored in a debut season when he netted 31 times in 1929-30. Those goals were instrumental in the club winning the Italian title that season and he also helped the Nerazzurri to titles in 1938 and 1940, with a Coppa Italia sandwiched inbetween.

A Little History:

After being formed in 1908 by a group of rebels in opposition to "Milan Cricket and Football Club" (now AC Milan), it did not take long for the club to win its first league title in 1910.
Il Balilla played 408 times for Inter, scoring a record 287 goals. In 1980, the club’s stadium was named after him. Inter won back-to-back scudetti in 1953 and 1954, with Benito Lorenzi, Swede Lennart Skoglund and Hungarian István Nyers instrumental in these successes.
The "Great Inter" era began in 1963, with the disciplinarian Argentine coach Helenio Herrera in charge. Under Herrera, Inter won two European Cups and three Serie A titles in the 1960s. The likes of Giacinto Facchetti, Sandro Mazzola and Luis Suarez were key players in these serial triumphs and are among the best players ever to put on the famous blue and black shirt. Between that glorious period of the 60s and the scudetto laden start to the new millennium, Inter won the title just three times. However, the Nerazzurri did claim three UEFA Cups in 1991, 94 and 98. Brazil striker Ronaldo was one of the scorers in the 98 final against Lazio after being signed for a world record fee from Barcelona. His debut season was one to remember with 25 league goals, but several serious knee injuries blighted his Nerazzurricareer and he eventually moved on to Real Madrid. Ronaldo was one of many expensive signings under oil tycoon Moratti, but it is only over the last few years that the team has delivered consistently on the field.

In 1963, Milan won the European level for the first time after beating Benfica in the final. This success was repeated in 1969, followed in the Intercontinental Cup title that year.

After the retirement of Gianni Rivera, Milan achievement plummeted. In 1980, Milan were involved in the scandal Totonero (gambling scandal and the determination result of the match) and the sanctions are relegated to Serie B. Milan quickly back up to Serie A, but fell again to Serie B because it ranks third from the bottom.

In 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi acquired the club and immediately invested a lot of money.
